Matching the Right System to the Right Client

The single biggest mistake I see newer stylists make is trying to fit every client into the one method they know best. It does not work that way. The art of this job is matching the right system to the right head, and that starts long before you pick up any hair.
How do you choose the right hair system for a client?
You match the system to three things: the amount and condition of the client's natural hair, their lifestyle, and their goals. Clients with healthy density can wear meshless or standard wefts. Clients with diffuse thinning or hair loss need a mesh foundation that spreads the weight instead of pulling on fragile strands. Getting this match right is what makes the difference between a beautiful result and a damaging one.
Start with the natural hair
I always begin with the scalp and the anchor hair. Someone thinning only at the crown has very different needs than someone with loss across the whole top. If there is enough healthy anchor hair, a meshless or beaded approach can work beautifully. If the hair is fragile, sparse, or recovering from damage, a mesh foundation protects it by distributing the weight of the extensions across the mesh instead of a few weak strands.
Then factor in lifestyle
A client who works out five days a week, swims, or travels constantly needs a system that holds up to that life. A client who wants something they barely think about needs a lower-maintenance install with a longer move-up window. I ask about workouts, water, sleep, and how much time they actually want to spend on their hair each morning. Their honest answers change my recommendation.
Finally, the goal
Volume, length, coverage, or all three. A client covering a thinning part has a different goal than a client who wants dramatic length for a wedding. When the method matches the goal, the client is thrilled. When you force a method that fights the goal, no amount of skill saves it.
Why this matters more than technique
I would rather a stylist consult well and install adequately than consult carelessly and install beautifully. The wrong system installed perfectly is still the wrong system. Slow down in the consultation chair. It is where the whole result is decided.
