What Every Stylist Should Know Before Consulting a Hair Loss Client

A good consultation is 80 percent of a successful mesh integration client relationship. Get this part right and the install becomes almost easy. Get it wrong and no amount of technical skill can rescue the appointment. Here is what every stylist should know before sitting down with a hair loss client for the first time.

The Emotional Reality

Every hair loss client walks into your consultation carrying weight you cannot see. They may have been putting off this appointment for months or years. They may have had a bad experience with a previous stylist. They may still be processing a diagnosis. Your first job is to slow down, be warm, and hold space. Nothing technical happens until they feel safe.

The History Questions to Ask

When did the hair loss start? What was happening in your life at that time? Is there family history of hair loss? Have you been diagnosed by a dermatologist or doctor? What treatments have you tried? What has helped? What has not? Are you on any medications that affect hair growth? Are you pregnant or postpartum? Have you had chemotherapy, radiation, or major medical treatment in the past year?

The Scalp Assessment

Ask permission before touching the scalp. Photograph from multiple angles. Look for pattern (diffuse, patchy, receding). Check anchor hair density around the loss zone. Feel the scalp for any tenderness, active shedding, or inflammation. Do not skip this step; it determines whether mesh integration is even appropriate.

The Expectations Talk

Explain that mesh integration is a cosmetic solution, not a medical treatment. It does not regrow hair. It does not cure alopecia. It gives coverage while any regrowth continues underneath. Set realistic expectations for install time, maintenance intervals, cost, and lifespan. Do not overpromise.

The Referral Conversation

If the client has not seen a dermatologist, gently encourage that step before or alongside the mesh install. If you are unsure whether the client's condition is appropriate for mesh integration, refer to a trichologist or dermatologist for evaluation before booking.

The Photograph Consent

Ask if you can photograph the install for their file. Ask separately if you can use any photos for portfolio or education, with their identity protected. Do not assume the client is comfortable being photographed. Many hair loss clients are not.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a hair loss consultation take?

45 to 60 minutes at minimum. Do not rush this appointment.

Should I charge for the consultation?

Yes. Consultation fees signal that the appointment is serious and prevent tire-kickers.

What if the client is not a good candidate?

Say so honestly and refer them to alternatives (topper, wig, dermatologist evaluation).

How do I handle emotional moments in the consultation?

Let the client lead. Keep tissues nearby. Do not rush them past feelings.

Should I ask about mental health treatment?

Only if the loss is trichotillomania-related, and only as it applies to install timing.
