Hair Extension Aftercare: The Complete Client Guide

The most common reason hair extensions look bad six weeks after install is not the install. It is aftercare. Every extension stylist should send every client home with a specific, written aftercare guide. This is that guide.

The Non-Negotiables

Shampoo

Use sulfate-free shampoo only. Sulfates strip the cuticle from human Remy hair extensions and shorten the wear life. Apply shampoo to the scalp and let it rinse through the length; never lather up the length directly.

Conditioner

Condition from mid-shaft to ends, never at the root or bond area. Conditioner at the bond softens the bond and shortens install life. Rinse thoroughly.

Brushing

Brush from the ends up, working section by section, using a soft-bristle or loop brush designed for extensions. Never brush from the root down. Never brush when hair is wet without a detangling spray.

Heat Styling

100% human Remy extensions handle heat styling well, but heat protectant is required every time. Keep flat irons and curling wands below 380 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sleeping

Braid the hair loosely or sleep on a silk pillowcase to minimize tangling and friction at the bond or weft. A silk bonnet is even better for high-activity sleepers.

Swimming

Chlorine and salt water both degrade extensions over time. Before swimming, wet the hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner as a barrier. Wash with sulfate-free shampoo after swimming.

Move-Ups

Book move-ups at 5 to 8 weeks depending on install method. Do not wait until the extensions are visibly grown out; that is already past the ideal move-up window and can strain the natural hair.

What to Never Do

  • Do not pull extensions out yourself. This damages natural hair every time.
  • Do not apply oil-based products near the bond, mesh, or weft attachment point.
  • Do not go to bed with wet hair without loosely braiding it first.
  • Do not use a regular brush; extension brushes are designed differently.
  • Do not use hot tools without heat protectant.

Signs Something Is Wrong

Call your stylist immediately if you experience persistent scalp itching, visible slippage of the extension away from the scalp, sudden shedding at the bond or weft, or any pain during brushing. These are signs of install issues that should be corrected right away.

The Realistic Timeline

Weeks 1 to 2 are the adjustment period. Weeks 3 to 6 are the peak look. Weeks 7 to 10 usually need a move-up. If aftercare is followed, a full install cycle can last 6 to 12 months of continuous wear with move-ups.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I wash extensions?

Two to three times per week for most clients. Daily washing degrades the wear life; less than twice a week can cause scalp buildup.

Can I use any shampoo on extensions?

Only sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates strip the cuticle and shorten wear life dramatically.

What brush should I use?

A loop brush or soft-bristle brush designed for extensions. Regular brushes catch on wefts and bonds.

Can I color my extensions at home?

No. Extension color work should be done by the stylist who installed them, using professional-grade products.

Will extensions damage my natural hair?

Not when installed, worn, and removed correctly. Damage almost always comes from home care mistakes or delayed move-ups.
